Maui Resident Camile Velasco Reaches American Idol Final 12
Camile Velasco, the 18-year-old waitress at her parents' IHOP at the Maui Mall, was the first of potentially three Hawaii residents to make the finals in Fox TV's popular American Idol. Performing Bryan McKnight's song One Last Cry Velasco secured 27.8 percent of the viewer votes - many from Hawaii, to secure the top spot in this round.
Velasco was the only one of this week's contestants to earn praise from all three of American Idol's judges, including the always unpredictable Simon Cowell.
Two Hawaiian contestants remain in the running to advance to the final twelve. Jonah Moananu, a part-time teacher on Oahu competes next Tuesday, followed by Jasmine Trias, a senior at the Maryknoll School on Oahu on March 2.
