Oahu Resident Jasmine Trias Reaches American Idol Final 12

Thursday March 4, 2004
Jasmine Trias, the 17-year-old Maryknoll High School senior, from Mililani, Oahu, was the second Hawaii resident to make the final 12 in Fox TV's popular American Idol. Performing the Whitney Houston ballad Run To You, Trias secured enough viewer votes - many from Hawaii, to secure the second spot in this round.

Of the three judges only Simon Cowell predicted both of last night's viewers' choices, however, judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul also predicted that Jasmine would make the cut. The often acerbic Cowell was refreshingly kind by commenting, "You're going to get a lot of votes, because you're 17, you've got a nice smile and you've got a flower in your hair. You are potentially a very good singer, no question or doubt. Good enough for me."

Jasimine plays piano, the ukulele and the guitar. She also dances hip-hop and hula. She enjoys all kinds of music including Hawaiian music, R&B, hip-hop, alternative and contemporary. While Jasmine is hoping for a singing career, she does have alternative plans should that not come to fruition. She will continue her education and hopefully go to nursing school.

Jasimine joins 18-year-old Camile Velasco of Maui who was a viewer's choice two week's ago to join the final twelve. Next week twelve "wild card" contestants will compete for the four remaining spots in the finals.
