Hawaii's Jasmine Trias Makes Final Three on The American Idol
Jasmine Trias, Hawaii's only remaining contestant on Fox TV's The American Idol has, to the surprise of all, made it to the final three contestants. Tuesday, May 11, 2004 was "Disco Night" on American Idol where each of the remaining four contestants were given the opportunity to sing two disco songs. Jasmine's choices were "Everlasting Love" and "It's Raining Men."
Jasmine's performance of "Everlasting Love" was weak to put it mildly. She seemed to miss many of the words and her voice continues to show signs of excessive strain. The judges' reactions ranged from totally negative on the part of Simon to "trying to be kind" on the parts of Paula and Randy. Jasmine's second selection "It's Raining Men" was even worse. The background music clearly overpowered her voice and she seemed to be lost at various points. All of this week's judges were critical of the performance.
It seemed clear that even Jasmine was not happy with her performances or the reactions of the judges. She was in tears following her second song as she gave her call-in number.
Much to everyone's surprise, however, when Wednesday night's show rolled around and the top two performers names were revealed, Jasmine was one of them. To everyone's surprise one of the clear cut favorites to win the contest, LaToya London, was voted off the show. The judges were in shock and clearly angered by the viewers' choice.
So, Jasmine has survived another week and based on this week's voting, she could conceivably reach the final two. It's hard to read exactly what the voters are thinking here. Does Jasmine survive solely on the strength of votes from Hawaii? While that appeared to be the case early in the contest, with only four contestants left this week, it seems unlikely that Hawaii's small population could so dominate the contest. Perhaps Jasmine has reached the status of the favored underdog who everyone roots for even if they know she probably should not win.
Next week will be Jasmine's biggest test yet and she desperately needs to find better songs, a stronger voice and a lot of luck.
