In Hana town, the pastures roll right up to the main street. The social centers are the baseball field and the two churches, where, on Sunday mornings, the hymns ring out in the old Hawaiian language and visitors are greeted with fresh flower lei. Hana is truly Maui's "Last Hawaiian Place."

Last year we went to Maui for our third time and stayed in Hana our first. It was just for three nights but was simply fantastic! We rented a cottage that had the most unbelievable view of the ‘Alenuihaha Channel. Although it was only 30 miles across to the northern tip of the Big Isle, we only once saw Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa silhouetting through the vog just after daybreak. Because we were staying in Hana, we were able to explore the Hana Coast Highway in much more detail than we ever did on the whirlwind drive from the other side of the island. We liked Hana so much we are going back in just a couple weeks.
