After All, They Say "Maui no ka oi"

Follow me on:

It was another perfect day on Maui. After all, they say "Maui no ka oi" (Maui is the Best) for a reason.

I had a great breakfast at the Sea House Restaurant at the Napili Kai Beach Resort. How can you beat two eggs, 5 strips of bacon, hash browns, toast, juice and coffee of tea for $9.95?!

I was scheduled to try the new zip line at Kapalua Adventures but high winds in the mountains forced me to reschedule for Sunday afternoon. That will actually help me pass my last day on Maui which otherwise was free.

I stopped by the Expedia Local Expert desk at the resort and concierge Meg booked me on my second whale watch of the trip with the Pacific Whale Foundation. As I said before, Expedia Local Expert does a great job, often on short notice.

The whale watch started slowly with few sightings in the first hour, but then we came across a pod of about a dozen males wildly chasing a prospective female across the channel - at what only could be called lightning speeds. It was easily my best whale watch experience in the last 15 years.

The Pacific Whale Foundation does a great job. They are a non-profit member supported organization with expert whale naturalists onboard each trip. I was lucky to have Lacey as the naturalist on both of my whale watches in the last week. Not only do you get to see whales but you also get to learn all about them and what brings them back to Hawaii waters each winter from their second home in Alaska.

After a meet and greet cocktail party with pupus, our group attended the weekly hula show by the Napili Kai Foundation. I'll be writing a lot more about that soon, but, as I've said many times, the future of the Hawaiian culture rests with the keiki, the children and there's no better example of children learning the dance and language of Polynesia than with what the Napili Kai Foundation does.

Dinner tonight was at the award-winning Pineapple Grill at Kapalua Resort. The dinner was a great sampling of Maui Chef Ryan Luckey's personal spin on Hawaiian Regional Cuisine. From appetizers of ahi carpaccio, grilled Mexican white shrimp and tartare of Kampachi to entrees of panko crusted kona blue kompachi and Maui onion crusted petite filet mignon, dinner was superb.

One of our dinner companions was MJ Harden of Hike Maui. You'll find no one more familiar with the island than MJ especially her knowledge of the places to hike and those places to strictly avoid. Tomorrow we hike on the northern part of West Maui with Hike Maui. It's definitely something I'm looking forward to.

Aloha Mr. Fischer
I enjoy your writings. Are you ever going to write about the Napili Kai Foundation? You mentioned that you were going to write about it later – did I miss it?

Thanks,
