Will Barack Obama's Vacation Help Hawaii's Tourism?

Wednesday August 20, 2008
Will Barack Obama's Vacation Help Hawaii's Tourism? It's hard to tell, but it certainly can't hurt that the news was full of Obama visiting Pearl Harbor, the Valley of the Temples and swimming at Sandy Beach.

It's funny though that the Democratic Party hardly ever mentions that Obama spent his formative years in Hawaii, attending the state's top private school, Punahou, currently best known as Michele Wie's former high school.

Could it be because although Hawaii is the USA's 50th state, a sizable percentage of mainland visitors when asked where they're from still reply, the USA? People in Hawaii are much too polite to respond that Hawaii is part of the USA. The correct answer would be from the mainland. Does Alaska suffer from this identity problem with people on the mainland?

Could all of this have something to do with the fact that Hawaii is the most ethnically diverse state in the USA where those of Asian descent outnumber Caucasians? Does the Obama camp and the Democratic Party fear a Hawaii association as much as the infamous living in a Muslin county factor. It looks like they do.

Either way, I predict that Obama will win 70% of the Hawaii vote this November despite John McCain's strong support from military families.

But, getting back to the question, will Barack Obama's Vacation Help Hawaii's Tourism? Share your thoughts in our comments section.
