The Leeward or Waianae Coast of Oahu is an area rarely seen by island visitors. For some, it's just too far away. Others have heard that it's too dangerous since the locals don't like tourists. Some have heard stories of how the homeless have taken over many of the beach parks and crime is rampant.

All of these reasons are valid, but only to a certain degree. The Leeward or Waianae Coast of Oahu is only about an hour away from Waikiki - really no further than the North Shore. The locals tend to like their privacy, but I've never felt like I'm in danger. There are homeless and while a small percentage may have drug or alcohol problems many are entire families where the parents go to work every day and the kids are picked up for school. Many simply cannot afford housing.

The Leeward or Waianae Coast of Oahu is beautiful. It has some of Oahu's best beaches and beach parks and most are rarely crowded. The geography of the mountains and valleys is stunning.

I hope you enjoy our driving tour of Oahu's Leeward or Waianae Coast.
