Have You Ever Been to Moloka'i?

I'm always surprised by how often I get asked if I've ever been to the island of Moloka'i.

Few people ever ask me if I've been to the island of Lana'i, much less any of the four biggest of the Hawaiian Islands.

In fact, I've been to Moloka'i four times. I know some Hawaii residents who have never been to any island other than the one they live on. That amazes me.

I've really enjoyed my visits to Moloka'i. It's a beautiful island and so very steeped in history. Did you know that Moloka'i is said to be where Hawaiain hula originated or that within a few weeks the island can say that it was home to two saints?

So, why do so few people visit the island? One of the most common reasons I hear are that there's just no place to stay and nothing to do there. Granted, since the closure of the Lodge and Beach Villas at the Moloka'i Ranch, there are limited options other than the Hotel Moloka'i which is now well managed by Aqua Hotels & Resorts.

In response to the other issue, however, there are many things to do on Moloka'i and many of them are free or will cost you very little. For more details, check out our feature on things to do for free on Moloka'i.
