So why should I visit Hawaii? It seems pretty far away and it's really expensive to get there.
That's and excellent question. You're right, Hawaii is far away from many areas of the world, and it can be costly to get there. Actually, however, if you live on the west coast, it's just as close as the east coast and a lot prettier! I've written an entire article answering this question. It's called, no surprise, So, why Hawaii?
What's the weather like in [you fill in the month]?
"Mid to high 80s, mostly sunny, light trades 15 to 20 mph, mauka showers in the afternoon." That forecast will be correct most of the time. Hawaii's climate is temperate with slight change in average temperature year round. The winter months of November to March tend to be wetter and cooler, which usually means more frequent showers. From August to October the islands tend to be a bit more humid with lighter or no trade winds. See more in my feature So, how's the weather?.
Come on! Is the water really that blue? warm? green? clear?
Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes. Blue. Warm but still refreshing. Green. Clear. You'll have to trust me for clear! The aquarium's coral reef cam isn't working right now. While we're in the water, get the facts about ocean safety, sharks and other dangerous sea critters and sun protection.
Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii?
There are many smart answers to this question. The truth is that Hawaii's three interstate highways, H-1, H-2 and H-3, each connect military bases or installations, which qualified them for federal funding for national and civil defense purposes. My favorite of the alternate answers is that the bridge or tunnel to the mainland is still being built. More information on getting around the island by land, sea or air, can be found in our transportation section.
What should I know about the culture of Hawaii before I visit?
Before I became your Guide to Hawaii / South Pacific Travel, I was the Guide to Hawaiian Culture here at About.com. All of the articles which I wrote regarding the culture and history of Hawaii are still available on this site.
