Winners to be Announced May 24 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki

By , About.com Guide

The Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts (HARA) has announced the finalists for the 2004 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. The awards honor achievements of excellence in the recording arts.

Only entries created, produced, and/or engineered; recorded by a local resident artist, musician, or technician, released during the eligible year; and primarily distributed in Hawaii are acceptable for nomination.

Leading the list of the 2004 nominations is Maui singer/composer Keali'i Reichel who received 11 nominations, 10 for his long-awaited album "Ke'alaokamaile" and one as co-producer of the multi-artist anthology album "Pride of Punahele II."

Receiving 7 nominations were veteran group Ho'okena and new artist Kainani Kahaunaele. Earning 4 nominations each are Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom & Willie K, Maila Gibson, Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, Cecilio & Kapono, and producer/engineer Jim Linkner & composer Puakea Nogelmeier.

HARA members vote to determine the winners in 21 categories. A panel of Hawaiian music and language experts selects the final nominees and winners for the Haku Mele and Hawaiian Language Performance awards.

The winner of the Favorite Entertainer Award is determined by a vote of the public to be conducted at local Borders Bookstores beginning in early May.

The 27th Annual Na Hoku Hanohano Awards show will take place May 24, 2004 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. A portion of the awards will be televised live on KFVE-TV starting 7:30 PM.

The best place to purchase copies of the albums nominated for this year's awards is online at the Hawaiian Music Island.
