The Na Pali coast is a roadless, almost trailess wilderness on the margin between the deep blue Pacific Ocean and sheer cliffs that soar several thousand feet. Although some people hike partway into the coast via the Kalaula Trail, most see its wonder by boat or helicopter.
The coast offers remarkable scenery including beautiful beaches, lush valleys, sea caves, frequent waterfalls and lots of ocean life. We saw giant green sea turtles, dolphins, flying fish and schools of other tropical fish. Although we missed them, other boats on the water that day saw migrating whales.
Zodiacs are powerful, rigid inflatable craft powered by twin outboard motors. They are designed to push through rough seas and pull up onto beaches through shallow water. They are the craft of choice of the Navy Seals and other military teams. Ironically, these tours were initially the second (and legal) career for marijuana farmers who bought the Zodiacs as their beasts of burden during the late sixties.
The ride to the Na Pali Coast includes a great sampling of Kauai's sites including Waimea Canyon from a distance and Barking Sands and Polihale Beaches. Even on a good day the ride can be a like a trip to the rodeo. Except for three seats in the back of the boat, all of the other passengers sit on the pontoons on the sides. You are asked to hold onto ropes running along the sides and floor. This is a fun ride with the wind in your hair and the spray in your face.
With the cooperation of the weather and the skill of the captain, you may be able to ride into a sea cave. For the lunch break, you typically pull into a small but beautfiful beach where there is great snorkeling and a short walk to an ancient Hawaiian fishing village.
For anyone who loves beautiful scenery and can handle a bouncy ride, the Captain Zodiac NaPali Coast tour is a great adventure.
