Hawaii Live Webcams
A Guide to Webcams, Streaming video and Other Live Video Sources in Hawaii

By , About.com Guide

I have received several e-mails from folks asking about live cameras in Hawaii that can be viewed online. Since many of our regular readers are former Hawaii residents now living elsewhere, it is understandable since local live camera shots are a great way to keep in contact with Hawaii.

In this feature I'll take a look at the web cams and livecams which I have been able to verify as active. That does not, however, mean that they will remain active. If you know of others to add to this list, please let me know and I will add them. Please allow time for these pages to load. Some are rather slow. Some require Java. Finally, some only operate during daylight hours.

Big Island Live Webcams

Blue Hawaiian Helicopters Webcam
This webcam is located at the Waikoloa Heliport looking out towards the southeast from the dispatch area towards Kona.

Canada France Hawaii Telescope Webcams
The CFH observatory hosts a world-class, 3.6 meter optical/infrared telescope. The observatory is located atop the summit of Mauna Kea, a 4200 meter, dormant volcano located on the island of Hawaii. The CFH Telescope became operational in 1979. The mission of CFHT is to provide for its user community a versatile and state-of-the-art astronomical observing facility which is well matched to the scientific goals of that community and which fully exploits the potential of the Mauna Kea site.

Current Video from UKIRT
The world's largest telescope dedicated solely to infrared astronomy, UKIRT is sited in Hawaii near the summit of Mauna Kea at an altitude of 4194m above sea level. It is owned by the United Kingdom Science and Technology Facilities Council and operated, along with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), by the staff of the Joint Astronomy Centre, which is located in Hilo. The operation and development of UKIRT are overseen by the UKIRT Board.

Current Views at Mauna Loa Observatory
A number of different views from the summit of Mauna Loa are available on one page from the Mauna Loa Observatory (MLO) which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) - Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) - Global Monitoring Division (GMD).

This camera shows a live video stream of Hilo Bay from the rooftop of the Pacific Tsunami Museum. In my opinion, considering history, this is a perfect use and place for a webcam.
