View of episode 53 vent active on south flank of Pu`u `O`o. The vent began erupting on February 20, 1993. Within four days, it formed a broad, dome-shaped spatter cone 13 m high.

View of the lava fountain from the tephra-covered slope of Pu`u `O`o. The fountain is about 15 m high.

Lava flows from the episode 53 vent spread southward from Pu`u `O`o. On February 23, 1993, the flows roofed over and drained into a skylight of the main lava tube system leading from the still-active episode 51 vents. Lava from the two vents coalesced in the tube and eventually reached the sea at Kamoamoa.
