Construction is now underway on the new Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa on the Big Island's south shore, and the hotel is projecting an opening for fall of 2004. On Thursday, January 8th, a ground breaking and traditional Hawaiian blessing took place at the hotel site. In attendance were representatives from the hotel's owner Koa Hotel, LLC, landowner Kamehameha Schools, management company Starwood Hotels & Resorts and a throng of government officials and community members.

Situated on an ancient lava flow on the southern shore of Keauhou Bay, the hotel rests on 22 spectacular oceanfront acres. Keauhou means "new beginning," a fitting description for the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa.

In July 2000, the landmark Kona Surf Hotel closed and in 2001 came under the new ownership of Koa Hotel, LLC. The property is currently undergoing a comprehensive $45 million renovation and will be reborn at its fall opening as the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa.

The hotel will feature 530 rooms and suites, a full-service spa and fitness center, tennis courts, jogging paths, two restaurants, a business center, complete catering and convention services including the largest conference facility in Kona, a wedding chapel, children's play center, and an incredible "fantasy pool" with a 200-foot lava tube waterslide.

Renovation plans include: the restructuring of the hotel entrance to provide an enhanced arrival experience, with an open view to the ocean from an expanded porte cochere; a new Front Desk area; refurbishment of the 1.5 acre outdoor luau gardens; renovation of the wedding chapel, gazebo and grounds; creation of a new world-class spa facility and a multilevel fantasy pool; and renovation of guest rooms, suites, restaurants, meeting rooms and convention facilities.

Project architect is Watanabe Chun & Iopa Architects & Design Consultants, LLC. The construction management consultant is CMD Construction Management and Development, Inc.

The Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa is located within the 1,850-acre Keauhou resort area, just east of Kailua-Kona on the island of Hawaii. The property sits right at the water's edge on tranquil Keauhou Bay, a gathering place for manta rays. Each evening, the gentle sea creatures glide along the shoreline to feed--a mesmerizing sight for hotel guests and the inspiration for the hotel's new logo which features a manta ray in ocean waves.

The renovation and reopening of the hotel marks the beginning of a major economic and cultural revitalization in the Keauhou region. This will be the most significant hotel project to occur in the area for more than 10 years. Keauhou is the birthplace of King Kamehameha III and was once the playground for Hawaiian royalty. Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. and Koa Hotel, LLC plan to position the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa as a four-diamond property with a strong focus on Hawaiian culture and the rich history of Keauhou.
