Starwood Hotels & Resorts of Hawaii

During the first decade of the 1900s, Ford produced its first Model-T automobile. The Wright Brothers built their first airplane. The first silent movie was produced. And, along a relatively unknown, undeveloped strip of white sand beach, The Moana Hotel opened. Twenty-six years later, "The First Lady of Waikiki" was joined by her sister property, The Royal Hawaiian. The "Grandes Dames" of Waikiki have watched Waikiki grow up and even today offer guests the same gracious hospitality they were known for over a century ago.

The Moana Hotel, now known as the Sheraton Moana Surfrider, opened in 1901, followed by The Royal Hawaiian - the "Pink Palace of the Pacific" - in 1927. Together the hotels have since become the jewels of Waikiki. To preserve their history and elegance, the two properties are undergoing major improvements over the next several months.

Sheraton Moana Surfrider

The Sheraton Moana Surfrider’s extensive tower rejuvenation project began in June. All 386 guest rooms and 44 suites in the hotel’s tower wing will be included in the 18-month project. The Tower Wing renovation of the Royal Hawaiian, with its 166 guest rooms and multiple corridors, also will be completed in early 2004.

The Sheraton Moana Surfrider project will dramatically upgrade the guest rooms and public areas while maintaining its historical and uniquely Hawaiian elegance. Interior furnishings are to be replaced and harmonious artwork will complement the distinctive décor. New carpeting, designed with Hawaiian designs and patterns, will blend seamlessly with contemporary features.

The dark, exotic texture of coconut shells will accent the bed headboards, dressers and refrigerator cabinets while richly textured wall coverings, adorned with crown molding, will surround the entire room. Designed for tranquility and comfort, the renovated guest rooms will feature new light fixtures and graceful resting chairs.

To meet the needs of the growing family market, the number of connecting rooms will be increased with the addition of more connecting doors.

Other plans include extensive improvements to the elevator lobby and corridors that evoke a more welcoming and inviting feel.
