On December 3, 2003, Starwood Vacation Ownership, Inc. (SVO) held a traditional Hawaiian blessing for its grand opening of the first phase of The Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas, Starwood's first vacation ownership property in Hawaii. Prior to opening in September 2003, the resort sold out its inventory of the first phase consisting of 103 villas. Upon completion, the property will have 280 villas. The resort has brought approximately 200 jobs to the island of Maui.

"We are extremely excited to officially open what is the most successful vacation ownership resort in Hawaii," said Raymond "Rip" Gellein, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of SVO. "We have an incredible product that has raised the bar for the entire industry. Hawaii is an important market for Starwood and we look forward to increasing our presence on the islands."

The Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas features deluxe and premium studio and one- and two-bedroom villas overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Each villa comes with the luxuries of a well-appointed home with distinctive touches that reflect typical Westin sophistication and style. Amenities include a fully-equipped kitchen, living and dining room, televisions in each of the private bedrooms, The Westin Heavenly Bed and Westin Heavenly Bath, washer and dryer, two telephone lines with voicemail and dataport, and a television, DVD and stereo system in the living room. The one- and two-bedroom villas also feature a private balcony.

The two-bedroom lock-off villa, which sleeps up to eight guests, provides families and friends traveling together the ability to separate the two bedrooms, creating the privacy and feel of two separate villas. This villa along with the other two-bedroom villas also feature whirlpool tubs and a living room with a queen size sleeper sofa and separate dining areas.

Owners and guests will enjoy the conveniences of the resort's many amenities including a general store and a business center with computers and Internet access. The resort also will offer a variety of recreational activities including a lavish 7,600-square-foot swimming pool featuring waterfalls and a 90-foot slide, a poolbar, lighted tennis courts, owners lounge and game room and outdoor gas grills. Just for the kids, the resort features a kiddie pool and The Westin Kids Club children's program, which offers cultural activities and excursions to nearby attractions. For relaxation and rejuvenation, guests can enjoy the resort's two hot tubs, or work up a sweat in The Westin Workout Fitness Center, which features a sauna and steam room.
