Big Island of Hawaii
as seen from space

Three main volcanoes make up the island of Hawaii: the older volcanoes Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and the recent Kilauea seen venting steam. This color infrared image is one of a pair to compare the differences between color film and color infrared film. Color film presents an image as it appears to the human eye whereas color infrared imagery reduces atmospheric haze and portrays vegetation as shades of red.

This photo was taken on the STS-52 (Space Shuttle) mission on 11/01/92.
