Although the weather forecast for Maui on Sunday was for more clouds and occasional rain, the dawn broke with some breaks in the clouds and prospects for improving weather as the day went on.
As a resident of the Philadelphia area and an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan, my day's schedule called for me to watch the two NFL championship games. The AFC game kicked off at 7:30 a.m. and the Eagles-Rams game at 11:30 a.m. It's definitely strange watching live NFL football in the early morning.
Eileen is not a football fan by any stretch of the imagination. She decided to go and explore the action at Kaanapali Beach, just a couple of miles south of our condo. The recent weather system has brought quite heavy winds and high surf to West Maui.

While high surf is the dream of boogie boarders and surfers, it tends to keep everyone else on the beach and out of the water.
The current weather conditions have brought very low-hanging clouds over the West Maui Mountains, resulting in some beautiful photo opportunities. One of the most amazing things in Hawaii is that you can stand in one place and look in opposite directions and see such different things. While the view towards the ocean can be filled with bright sunshine, the view towards the mountain can be equally as filled with clouds, rain and rainbows.

By mid-afternoon the weather was quite lovely and we decided to drive north to Kapalua Bay and explore the Kapalua Beach area. Kapalua Beach has been chosen several time by Condé Nast and Dr. Beach as the best beach in the world.
On our last visit construction was underway for the Coconut Grove Condominiums at Kapalua. The area immediately behind the beach was filled with construction equipment and the noise level was very unpleasant. We were curious to see how the completed project would fit into the bay area.

We were pleased to discover that the condominiums were very tastefully done and that Kapalua Beach has once again been returned to its former glory.
On the south end of Kapalua Beach you will find the Bay Club. The majority of the beach is backed by the new Coconut Grove Condominiums. The north end of the beach is home to the Kapalua Bay Hotel, a beautiful property managed by Starwood Hotels and Resorts.
We have a bust schedule set for ourselves over the next two weeks. Tomorrow our day will be highlighted by dinner at Teppan-Yaki Dan at the Sheraton Maui Resort.
