Hawaii Diary
Aloha Friday, March 20 - The Bishop Museum and the Spirit of Aloha
Today we had the great pleasure of meeting some of our fellow Aloha Guides here at The Mining Company.
Today we spent the bulk of the day at the Bishop Museum at 1525 Bernice Street in Honolulu. Our Guide for the visit was our former Honolulu/O'ahu Guide Kathy Durham. I have spoken to Kathy many times on the phone but nothing is like actually meeting someone in person. Kathy has a wealth of knowledge about these islands and a wonderfully warm and friendly personality. You can't find a better Guide.
The Bishop Museum is recognized as the State Museum of Natural and Cultural History. While the name of the museum is officially the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, the museum was actually established by her husband Charles Bishop to whom Bernice had left her personal property upon her death in 1885 fulfilling their dream of preserving Hawaii's cultural heritage.
We'll be doing a much more in depth feature on the Bishop Museum later this year.
A visit to the Bishop Museum is easily a full day experience but the educational benefits cannot be underestimated.
Our evening was devoted to dinner and an evening of aloha with our fellow Aloha Guides, Kathy Durham and Brian Durham, Linda Alders and Jim Pavelle. Dinner was at Sam Choy's which is located off of the Nimitz Highway near the main store of Hilo Hattie. The food was great and the company was even better. It was such a wonderful experience for Eileen and I finally to meet folks who we have known for several years, but never met in person. That's one of the really weird things that the Internet brings to our society. We can make and maintain friendships and associations for years and yet never meet the actual people that we deal with on a daily basis. The opportunity to actually meet these folks was an experience that Eileen and I will long treasure
.
Following dinner we ventured over to Aloha Tower for an evening of aloha at The Pier Bar where Henry Kapono was performing live. Well, needless to say the evening stretched into the early morning, so we'll have to keep today's feature brief.
Join us tomorrow for a report on our final full day on O'ahu. Our plans call for a busy day in the Honolulu area, so stop by tomorrow and join us.
