Hawaii Diary
Sunday, March 22 - Island Hop

Today was in many ways an uneventful yet somewhat sad day. The morning was devoted to packing up all our belongings and numerous purchases in order to move to our next stop, Maui. You never quite realize how much "stuff" you accumulate on these trips until it's time to pack your bags and move on. By our figuring we added about 25 pounds to our luggage. We already know that we will need to ship some items home.

Although we were excited about our upcoming week in Maui and the opportunity to show my father one of the most beautiful parts of Hawaii, we were somewhat sad to leave O'ahu and Waikiki, places which we always find to be an exciting and so vibrant.

We leave with fond memories of our stay, especially the wonderful hospitality shown by our fellow Aloha Guides, Brian, Jim, Kathy and Linda. Mahalo nui loa.

For months we have been hearing about the drought in Hawaii and especially on Maui, yet you would not know it by today's weather. We left O'ahu in the rain and arrived on Maui in the rain. It even was raining on the resort area on the west coast of Maui and boy was it windy! The surf was high and the wind strong. We had to put on long pants and jackets. But at the end of most rain storms in Hawaii, there is a rainbow and we had a very lovely one tonight right in back of where we are staying at Paki Maui in Honokowai.

The wind was clearly blowing from the west to the east and that may have been responsible for the fact that my father's flight was delayed by over an hour. Just a few days ago our flight from Chicago was an hour shorter in flight time yet today, despite an on-time departure, my dad's flight was delayed.

By the time we arrived back at our home base on Maui it was 11:00 p.m.. My father awakened at 7:00 a.m. on the east coast and it is after midnight as I write this so he has almost pulled what we used to call in college "an all-nighter". For him tomorrow will be a day of rest. Eileen and I have other plans, so stay tuned for a report on our first full day on Maui and some exciting places that we will visit..
