Makaha Beach Park
Our exploration of the Leeward Shore took us past the beautiful Makaha Beach Park which features an exceptionally long and wide beach.
Like most Leeward Shore beaches, this beach often sees high waves in the winter. While the waves of spring and summer are considerably smaller in height, you must always be mindful of severe backwashes at most every Hawaiian Beach.
From Makaha we continued south past Pokai Bay and Waianae until we reached the U.S. Naval Magazine at Lualualei. Most tourists will need to continue south around Kapolei in order either to return to Waikiki or proceed through Central O`ahu to the North Shore area.
If, however, you or a member of your party is a current or former member of the U.S. military with a valid military ID, you can proceed through the U.S. Naval Magazine across the Waianae Mountains, through the Kolekole Pass and into Schoffield Barracks, a U.S. Army base.

This cuts your travel time considerably and leave you smack in the middle of Central O`ahu from where you can proceed south to Honolulu and Waikiki or north to Haleiwa and the North Shore.
We'd really like to thank Kathy Durham for serving as out guide today. Be sure to check out Kathy's Honolulu/Hawaii site here at About.com.
Tomorrow is our last day on O`ahu. We plan to stick pretty close to Honolulu and rest up a bit before we have to pack up and move to Maui on Wednesday. Stop back tomorrow as we finally make it to Tantalus and Round Top Drive.
