From May 20 to June 3, Lahaina is hosting a festival "In Celebration of Canoes". For the second consecutive year the festival is honoring Hawaii's heritage with Polynesia by bringing together delegates from Pacific Island nations to showcase traditional skills of canoe carving.

Master carvers from the Cook Islands, Hawaii, New Zealand, Tahiti and Tonga have been busy all week carving canoes under the Banyon Tree in Lahaina. The festival will culminate next Saturday night with the blessing and launch of the canoes followed by a luau.

Tonight a parade was held featuring various Maui County outrigger canoe club and hula groups from each Polynesian nation represented in the festival.
