Kônane
The first board game in Hawaii was kônane. In his book, A Voyage Round the World from 1806 to 1812, Archibold Campbell described the game as "a game somewhat resembling draughts (checkers), but more complicated. It is played upon a board about twenty-two by fourteen, painted black, with white spots, on which men are placed...the game is won by the capture of the adversary's pieces."

The game is not only played on a board. In ancient times it was played on a slab of lava or a rock. The object of the game is to capture the opponents "men" for justice and for sacrifice.
