While many people do not think about Hawaii as a family destination, in fact, it offers many diverse opportunities for parents and their children both to have fun and also to learn about Hawaii.

Julie Applebaum has written a well researched book that professes to contain "hundreds of ideas for day trips with the kids."

Examining each island individually, the author begins each chapter by outlining "Julie’s Top Picks" for that given island. On Oahu, the author recommends such activities as hiking Diamond Head, visiting the Iolani Palace (the United States’ only royal residence), and watching the marine creatures at Sea Life Park.

On Maui, Ms. Applebaum suggests a whale-watching trip, a trip to the summit of Haleakala to watch the sunrise and a snorkeling adventure at Molokini Atol.

When vacationing on the Big Island, the author suggests a trip to the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, a horseback ride on the Parker Ranch and a trip to the depths of the Waipio Valley. Of course a swim with the dolphins at Dolphin Quest at the Hilton Waikoloa is a must.

The author takes care to suggest a wide range of activities, some of which will appeal to a family who wants to have fun in the sun and others which will appeal to a family that wants to learn about the culture and history of Hawaii.

In addition to her "top picks", the author goes into extensive detail in showing the reader the many and various other opportunities for family fun in Hawaii. She also has done extensive research into places for family dining in Hawaii.

The book concludes with an excellent appendix, which contains a calendar of annual events in Hawaii to help families plan their visit around some of the many cultural events in the islands.

Written by a parent for parents and their children, this book is an opinionated, personal and easy to use guide and a must read for all members of the family before their Hawaiian vacation.
