While visiting the eastern side of the Big Island (the locals call it "Hilo-side"), many people pass right through Hilo Town, either by chance or by choice. This is a shame, for they are missing a true jewel of Hawaii. Hilo is home to a wonderful and historic downtown area with two fine museums and some great shopping, beautiful natural wonders, lots of rainbows, several lovely parks and a great fish auction held early each morning. Despite its rainly reputation, (the rain falls mainly at night), Hilo's people are some of the friendliest in Hawaii.
