It was just about a year ago, on a cold winter day at the Old City Tavern in Philadelphia, PA, that I attended a lunch hosted by the Big Island Visitors Bureau. Seated next to me was Gary Morrow, the owner of an adventure tour company named KapohoKine Adventures, LLC.

Gary and I talked for much of the lunch about the exciting tours that his company offers as well as about their dedication to maintaining a carbon-neutral footprint and to sustainable tourism to preserve and protect Hawaiian open space and legacy farm holdings. I was excited not only about the tours that they offer but about their eco-tourism efforts.

I quickly decided that when I next visited the Big Island I wanted to experience some of what KapohoKine has to offer.

I have to admit that on that first meeting I never asked Gary the obvious question. How did the name KapohoKine come about and what is its meaning or significance?

When I finally asked Gary that question, he replied, "Kapoho is where we got started and Kine in Hawaiian means anything and everything. So we fell in love with Kapoho and wanted share anything and everything about the area to our guests! Our logo was created by my friend in South Dakota and he asked me to write down what Hawaii meant to me and he created our logo... The circular black image in the middle is a Koru. It's a furn just starting to uncurl which stands for new life and new beginnings. The black is for the new land created by Madam Pele. The red in the fish is for the birth of the new land, molten lava and the fish is a water sign because I'm a Pisces!"

A year ago I had no idea where Kapoho actually was. Since that time I've learned that it's a small coastal residential area in the Puna District of the Big Island of Hawaii - an area that I knew far too little about and one which I wanted to explore and share with others.

Thus, on my December 2009 trip to the Big Island, I got to experience a lot of what KapohoKine Adventures offers. In addition, I rented a cottage in Kapoho for the last four days of my Big Island visit.

I was able to experience their very popular Secrets of Puna tour and the luncheon/waterfall portion of their Big Island Grand "Fire & Falls" tour.

In this feature I'll give you a brief overview of KapohoKine Adventures and then a brief description of each of their current tour offerings.

Let's begin with an overview of KapohoKine Adventures.
