This is the authentic traditional Mai Tai recipe from the "Mai Tai" Bar at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki. The original Mai Tai was created by Victor J. Bergeron in 1944 and brought to Hawaii in 1953 at the Royal Hawaiian, Moana and Surfrider Hotels.

Developed in the mid-1920s, The Royal Hawaiian officially opened its doors on Feb. 1, 1927, perfectly embodying the beauty of its location and the romantic atmosphere of what would soon become one of the most popular destinations in the world. Indeed, it attracted a coterie of elite visitors—from the Rockefellers to the Beatles, as well as heads of state and Hollywood luminaries such as Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Wood, and Dean Martin.

Many have tried to improve upon this original recipe, but time has shown that this recipe remains the best.

Prep Time: 1 minute

Total Time: 1 minute

  • 1 oz. Dark Rum
  • 1 oz Light Rum
  • 1 oz Orange Curacao
  • 2 oz Orange Juice
  • 1/2 oz Lime Juice
  • Dash Orgeat
  • Dash Simple syrup (bar syrup)

Combine all of the ingredients in the order listed in a Old Fashioned style glass over shaved ice. Stir with a swizzle stick. Garnish with a slice of pineapple and a cherry.

The Best I've Tried, Member hawaii_guy

I have never been a huge Mai Tai fan. They usually hand you a really weak, somewhat sour one at most luaus. Since, however, this is the original recipe, I decided to try it. Once I had all of the ingredients rounded up, I made one for my wife and myself. It was really excellent. I guess I'll have to stop by the Royal Hawaiian when we're in Hawaii the next time to get one at the bar. Try this recipe. It's really good.
