Front Street will be closed from Baker Street on the north end of town, to Prison Street on the south end. The closure will extend to Shaw Street during the children's parade.
The evening's festivities begin at 4:30 p.m. with the West Maui Soroptimist and Lahaina Rotary Clubs' Annual Children's Costume Parade starting at Lahaina Center, on the corner of Front and Papalaua Streets.
Hundreds of tiny spooks and superheroes will make their way down Front Street to Kamehameha Iki Park at 525 Front Street, where they will receive a parade ribbon and a free bag of goodies to start off their night of trick-or-treating.
If you plan on attending the Children's Costume Parade be sure to arrive early to get good seat on the curb and remember to bring some candy for the children in the parade.
Other features include Halloween-themed crafts and activities, and food & beverage booths under the Banyan Tree which raise funds for nonprofits. Live music is performed on two stages while revelers dance in the street.
LahainaTown presents the Maui Tacos Halloween Costume Contest in Banyan Tree Park, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Restaurants and shopping centers offer costume contests throughout the evening.
Tips from Your Guide
Your Guide and his wife attended the 2003 Lahaina Halloween celebration and we offer these tips:
- Plan to arrive before 3:00 p.m. is you want to try to get one of the hard-to-find parking spaces in town. Otherwise, you'll need to park outside of downtown Lahaina and take a short walk into town. We parked at the Lahaina Cannery Mall on the north end of town which is about a 15 minute walk from downtown.
- Wear comfortable shoes since you will likely be standing for most of the afternoon and evening. Keep your wallet and purses in a safe place since the crowds are thick and pick-pocketing can happen.
- Be sure to bring candy for the trick-or-treaters and don't forget your camera.
- The most family-oriented part of the celebration is the Children's Costume Parade at 4:30 p.m. Once night falls, downtown becomes more of an adult celebration with huge crowds of young adults partying well into the night.
- If you plan on eating a full meal in town, consider doing so mid-afternoon or be prepared for long lines after the Children's parade.
Halloween in Lahaina is supported by sales of the "official" Halloween T-shirt, a modern day collector's item. This year's logo art features classic movie lore with Lahaina's Bride of Frankenstein. T-shirts and tanks are available for $18 each in the Lahaina Visitor Center in the Old Lahaina Courthouse which is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
