After we made our way back up the hill towards Princeville, we made a brief stop at the Hanalei Lookout which when the weather cooperates provides one of the most scenic and photogenic locations in all of Hawaii.
The taro fields below have an interesting history. Originally used for taro, many of the fields were converted to rice during World War II, only to be returned to taro following the war. Then in 1982, a number of the fields were converted back to rice for the filming of the motion picture Uncommon Valor. During one scene a Marine helicopter was blown up. Unfortunately numerous pieces of shrapnel were blown into the fields and submerged in the water. Since the fields were to be replanted in taro and cultivation is done by hand, it took production company employees weeks to clear out all of the metal using metal detectors.
On our return trip "Bam Bam" led us in a sing-along of songs from the two famous musicals made on Kauai, Blue Hawaii starring Elvis Presley and Rogers and Hammerstein's South Pacific.
