As you drive down into the valley you'll notice that the road is now designated as Highway 560 and the mile markers have started over again. Mile marker 1 is located before you reach the bridge over the Hanalei River.
After crossing the bridge. you'll drive west past taro fields on your left and the river on your right. Soon you'll enter Hanalei Town. Before we stop and visit the town, we're going to take a right on Aku Road right after the Tahiti Nui Restaurant and Cocktail Bar and then another right when Aku Road dead ends into Weke Road. We're headed for Hanalei Pier and Hanalei Bay.
On the right you'll pass a beautiful home on the right set amidst a large grassy lawn. This is the former Wilcox Estate used in the filming of the TV mini-series, The Thorn Birds. A bit further down the road you'll come to the parking area for Hanalei Pier and the lovely little park nearby, Black Pot Park.
Hanalei Pier itself has been used in numerous films including Beachhead and The Wackiest Ship in the Army, but it and the adjoining beach will forever be associated with one motion picture, Rogers and Hammerstein's South Pacific.
The beach on either side of the pier was the principal filming location for most of the beach scenes involving the sailors led by Luther Billis played by Ray Walston. It was here that Juanita Hall as Bloody Mary, with voice dubbed by Mary Martin, sang the song about the mysterious island Bali Hai.
The views of the bay and the mountains beyond is amazing, especially if it has recently rained and the waterfalls are flowing.
The beach here is very popular with locals and visitors alike. Hawaiian Surfing Adventures, which is located on the right hand side of the road opposite the park offers kayak rentals, surfing and paddleboarding lessons and rentals and outrigger canoe trips.
