Hanalei Town is part surfer town, part vacation home to the rich and famous, part new age, part old Hawaii and part the hippie culture of the 1960's. Nowhere on Kauai will you see such an interesting group of locals intermixing with visitors on a daily basis.
In Hanalei you'll find a wide assortment of restaurants for almost every taste and price range. You can grab a quick burger and fries at Bubba Burger or Polynesia Cafe, a full lunch or dinner at Kalypso, a slice of pizza at Hanalei Pizza, tapas at Bar Acuda, fresh fish at Hanalei Dolphin, a plate lunch at Hanalei Juice and Taro or sushi at Bouchons to name just a few. The town also has one of the best organic food stores on Kauai, the Harvest Market.
Hanalei also has some great shopping. Historic Ching Young Village has a number of interesting and unique shops.
Across the street the Historic Hanalei Center consists of seven buildings and 19 businesses. One building, once used for the Hanalei School, is now home to Hanalei Surf Company, Tropical Tantrum and Hanalei Gourmet. The two-story brown building has one of my favorite shops, the Yellowfish Trading Company with its eccentric collection of Hawaiiana antiques and collectibles.
