Maui is a premier destination for golf with more than a dozen courses in superb settings where players can match their skills against the ingenuity of legendary golf course designers.
Maui has two distinct areas where the bulk of the accommodations and golf resorts are situated.
Home to historic Lahaina town, once the whaling capital of the Pacific and former capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, West Maui offers 72 holes of excellent golf at two major resort areas - the Ka'anapali Beach Resort and the Kapalua Resort. Of the two, Ka'anapali offers the most predictable weather, where Kapalua can experience both high wind and rain.
Protected from most rain and wind by Haleakala mountain, South Maui is home to two resorts areas - Wailea and Makena.
The other four Maui courses accessible to visitors are located between Pukalani and Wailuku including Maui's excellent Waiehu Municipal Golf Course, which overlooks Kahului Bay.
For those who love to watch golf, but don't play it themselves, Maui annually hosts a two professional golf tournaments. The season opening event on the PGA Tour, the Hyundai Tournament of Champions is played each January on the Plantation Course at Kapalua. The always popular Wendy's Champions Skins Game featuring stars of the Champions (Senior PGA) Tour also takes place in January at the Royal Kaanapali Golf Course in Lahaina.
