The extensive, year-long renovation of Kapalua Maui's historic Honolua Store is complete.
The renovation preserved the existing historic building while expanding the store's grocery, wine and sundry offerings – showcasing locally made specialty products, health foods and organic brands. Additionally, the Honolua Store now features a new espresso bar and additional outdoor seating.
The Honolua Store was built in 1929 by pineapple plantation carpenters and is still a central feature of Kapalua Resort, located between the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua and the Kapalua Adventure Center, within easy walking distance of each.
Over the years, the Honolua Store has undergone many renovations, but the exterior façade is similar to when it first opened.
Located across from the Ranch Office, the Honolua Store was the center of the plantation village. Not only was it the "company store," stocking goods and merchandise for purchase by plantation workers, it provided a "Town Center" for the village residents.
A bulletin board displayed notices of activities and events; pineapple workers could check the times for starting their field shifts and read labor union notices.
The area fronting the store was the gathering point for Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts parades, May Day festivities and other social events.
