Back in 2003, ghouls and goblins galore took to the streets of Lahaina, Maui on All Hallows Eve, October 31, otherwise known as Halloween. Front Street was closed to vehicular traffic from Baker Street on the north end of town to Prison Street on the south end, from 3:00 p.m. until shortly after midnight to accommodate the night's festivities and the thousands of spectators who attended Halloween in Lahaina. The closure extended to Shaw Street during the children's parade.
Activities included the West Maui Soroptimist Club's and Lahaina Rotary's Annual Children's Costume Parade, the Halloween Arts Festival at Banyan Tree Park, as well as entertainment throughout the evening at various areas along Front Street, at Banyan Tree Park, and The Wharf Cinema Center.
The most spectacular and creative costumes went on center stage during costume contests held throughout the night. Contestants competed for cash prizes, free activities, dinners, and more. Additional costume contests were held at various restaurants and shopping complexes in town.
Unfortunately in recent years much of the official celebration has been canceled, although many people still wander Front Street in costume and a number of restaurants still hold costume contests. The 32nd annual Keiki Halloween Costume parade still takes place. In 2010 it will be held on Sunday, October 31, 2010 at 4:30 p.m.. The parade moves along Front Street, past the Wharf Cinema Center and ends at the Banyan Tree Park.
