From the Lahaina Historical Guide:
"The original Seamen's Cemetery was adjacent to its current location and much larger than the small plot that remains, attesting to the rigors of whaling and primitive medical services available on shipboard. Old records show that many of the deaths occurred among very young men, some of them sailors whose boats were swamped when they tried to make it ashore through the surf at Lahaina".
