Due to heir cooperator's decision to leave Midway Atoll, the visitor program closed in January 2002. Although their vision to maintain Midway as the only remote island National Wildlife Refuge open to public visitation has not changed, it may be some time before they can once again welcome visitors to the atoll on a regular basis.
