Located 900 miles east of Australia, New Caledonia is a territory of France. The main island, Grande Terre, with an area of 6,500 square miles, is by far the largest island and contains about 90 percent of the population. In 1774 Captain James Cook landed at Balade, on the east coast of the mainland, and named the island New Caledonia for his native Scotland.
