Whether you're a frequent or potential visitor, former Hawaii resident or still live in Hawaii, you'll want to keep up with Hawaii news.
Fortunately Hawaii has a number of excellent sources for news on what's going on in the islands. Each island has at least one major newspaper and often several smaller, local publications. All of these have websites that feature varying amounts of the content in their print editions. Some offer, for a fee, full electronic versions of their entire print editions.
In addition there are several excellent independent sources for Hawaii news that are available exclusively online. Finally, all of the major TV stations in Hawaii offer news either in print, archived videos or live streams of their broadcasts especially when big news events take place.
Here are some of our favorite sources for Hawaii news.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser published its first edition June 7, 2010, combining the best of the 128-year-old Honolulu Star-Bulletin and the 154-year-old Honolulu Advertiser. It is the largest and most popular newspaper in Hawaii, concentrating primarily on news about the City and County of Oahu. It's website is an excellent source for daily news about what's going on in the islands.
The Maui News is the major daily newspaper for the island of Maui, and is a must read for all who wish to keep up with news of what's happening on Maui. It is readily available in print on Maui as well as with its online edition. The newspaper contains many features and stories not found on the website. Conversely, the site has resources not available in print.
As is evident from the name, The Garden Island News is the primary daily newspaper for the islands of Kauai and Ni'ihau. It has been continually published by Kauai Publishing Company since 1902. The print edition is widely available on-island and the online edition contains many of the stories covered each day in the print edition. The company publishes an excellent quarterly supplement for visitors entitled Essential Kauai.
The Hawaii Tribune Herald is the primary daily newspaper serving Hilo and the surrounding communities on the east side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Their online edition includes local news stories, but lacks many of the features available in either their print edition or e-Edition (which contains the entire contents of the print edition and is available by subscription.)
The sister publication of the Hawaii Tribune Herald, West Hawaii Today is a daily newspaper circulated on the west side of Hawaii's Big Island from North Kohala to Ka'u. The newspaper is the main source of local news to the West Hawaii community, and it also provides national and international coverage. It's online version contains man, but not all, of the stories in the print edition.
