Pilot Whale Encounter

Pilot Whale

Photo by Kara Benson - Wild Side Specialty Tours

We were extremely lucky on this day. After sailing several miles offshore, Kara spotted a pod of animals in the distance. They did not appear to be dolphins since they moved much more slowly and seemed much larger than any dolphins would be.

Tori revved up the engine and in short order we approached what turned out to be a large pod of pilot whales. This is a rare and exciting experience.

Pilot whales are actually part of the dolphin family although their behavior is closer to that of the larger whales. They travel is slow moving pods and often simply seem to be lounging in one area for long periods of time, especially on a sunny day.

The larger whales are found along the boundaries of the pod guarding the females and their young who congregate closer to the center.

We were extremely lucky and spent a good hour enjoying these magnificent creatures.
