Oahu Restaurant News for the Summer of 2009
Restaurants & Cuisine

By John Fischer, About.com

Oahu is known for its diverse culture, which is exhibited by the island assortment of foods. With wonderful choices and an array of cuisine options, there's sure to be a restaurant for everyone.

  • The new Aloha Table restaurant in Waikiki is part of a Japanese restaurant chain that opened its first Hawaii location in April. The menu is a mix of pasta, Asian cuisine and local-style dishes. The restaurant is open daily for lunch, dinner and late-night dining.

  • New to Manoa Marketplace is Fendu Boulangerie, a European-style bakery that offers freshly baked bread, pastries, sandwiches, and gourmet pizzas. All of the pastries and breads are made from scratch using natural ingredients, and pizzas are made with fresh toppings.

  • Two new farmers' markets have recently opened on Oahu. On Wednesdays, from 4-7 p.m., the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu hosts the Honolulu Farmers Market, presented by the Hawai'i Farm Bureau Federation and featuring locally grown produce, baked goods and hot food plates. The Haleiwa Farmers Market on Oahu's North Shore is open on Sundays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and features everything from locally grown produce, North Shore raised meats and fresh dog treats to cosmetics and crepes. The market is completely solar powered and absent of non-renewable materials; shoppers must bring their own shopping bags. Activities for kids, educational demonstrations and live music can also be found at the Haleiwa Farmers Market.

  • The Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa's Elegant Dive bar is hosting a "5 at 5" sunset hour special featuring $5 cocktail and pupu specials from 5-6 p.m. The open-air, poolside bar also features free nightly entertainment from 6-9 p.m.

  • Sweet Home Waimanalo, which opened in May, is a home-style barbeque restaurant in East Oahu. The restaurant specializes in slow smoked barbeque and also serves sandwiches, salads, tacos, wraps, chili, curry, and smoothies. Sweet Home Waimanalo makes all of its sauces from scratch and uses locally grown Waimanalo produce in its dishes as much as possible.

  • Tropics Bar & Grill at the Hilton Hawaiian Village opened in May following an $11 million renovation. The restaurant and bar now has a contemporary new island design, featuring glass tiles, warm wood tones and floral fabrics. Its space has significantly expanded with more indoor and outdoor seating, a 36-seat bar, larger kitchen, and a private dining room. The main architectural highlight is the new outdoor fire pits around the restaurant's perimeter that fronts the beach. Tropics Bar & Grill also features nightly live Hawaiian music and a revamped menu.
