Oahu strives to distinguish Itself from other major tourist destinations.

By John Fischer, About.com

The Island of Oahu, known as the Heart of Hawaii, sets the rhythm of the islands and leads by example with new improvements, changes and additions on an ongoing basis. Below is a glimpse of what's new on Oahu:

Hotels & Resorts

The island of Oahu has fabulous hotels and resorts for people of all ages and budgets. Oahu's hotels are constantly updating and adding an array of activities and packages that are sure to make any trip to Oahu unforgettable.
  • The Ala Moana Hotel has completed a multi-million dollar transformation making it Honolulu's definitive address for upscale, urban relaxation. The property's 1,154 guest rooms, including 67 suites, offer a fresh, contemporary ambiance.

Rooms are well appointed with stone flooring in the entryways, marble and custom woodwork in the bathrooms, new beds that feature custom bedding and artwork, and elegant glass balcony enclosures. The hotel also offers five diverse restaurants, Honolulu's popular Rumours nightclub, a spacious new sundeck with poolside cocktail bar, and an impressive fitness center.

  • More than $26 million has been spent upgrading Aqua Hotels & Resorts' Waikiki properties - validating the company's AquaFRESH brand promise. The extent of renovation includes the complete makeover of three properties: Aqua Palms & Spa, Aqua Waikiki Wave Hotel, The Equus Waikiki with the Aqua Essence & Spa and Ocean Tower Hotel at Waikiki Beach to be completed in 2007.

Other properties that receiving less extensive refurbishments in 2006 include Aqua Aloha Surf - public area improvements and guest room upgrades and Aqua Bamboo & Spa - entrance and outer sanctuary enhancements, with guest room improvements slated for 2007. Work scheduled for completion in 2007 totals over $8 million.

Property upgrades have distinguished Aqua as a contemporary company that embraced the condotel concept early on and emerged with two distinct brands - Aqua Boutique and Aqua Lite hotels.

  • Aqua Hotels & Resorts has added new features to the complimentary amenity package available to guests. In addition to free daily continental breakfast, newspaper, WiFi/high-speed Internet, lobby coffee service, in-room coffee and tea packets, departure cookie amenity, activity coupon booklet and fitness room access (where facilities are located), Aqua is also offering a free bottle of water on arrival, free local and toll-free calls, and free use of in-room safes.

  • Castle Resorts & Hotels recently added Hokele Suites Waikiki (formerly Marc Suites Waikiki) on Oahu to its growing resort management portfolio. The 114 all-suite hotel will undergo a $4.5 million phased renovation beginning this year.

The new interior design will be vibrant and contemporary with a tropical motif inspired by the natural elements abundant in Hawaii such as ocean, waterfalls, sky, flowers, ferns, lava, and rock. The result will be a repositioning of the hotel from a two-star budget property to a three-star boutique hotel.

  • The highly anticipated Embassy Suites®-Waikiki Beach Walk opened its doors in December 2006, and became the brand's first all-leisure property and the first all-new, all-suite hotel in Hawaii. The 21-story Embassy Suites-Waikiki Beach Walk consists of two all-suite towers, the Hula Tower and the Aloha Tower, featuring both one and two-bedroom suites - many with stunning ocean views.

The hotel's Grand Lanai boasts a spacious sundeck, swimming pool and waterfall, and features a covered terrace where guests enjoy the brand's signature, complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast each morning, and a manager's reception with complimentary refreshments and appetizers in the evenings.

  • The Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa enters 2007 by continuing with its "Village Rejuvenation" project. Known collectively as the "Village Rejuvenation," the project involves two major, multi-million-dollar projects, plus a number of other upgrades at the 22-acre resort. The first major project is the construction of the 38-story Grand Waikikian timeshare tower along Ala Moana Boulevard. And the other is the rejuvenation of the Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon.

In addition to The Grand Waikikian and the Kahanamoku Lagoon Rejuvenation, the Hilton Hawaiian Village is also continuing with upgrades to its Rainbow Tower loading dock, Village Green event venue, and room refurbishments in the Tapa Tower. Because of the immense size of the resort, most areas at the Hilton Hawaiian Village are experiencing minimal impact from these projects.

  • Hyatt Regency Waikiki has just opened StayFit@Hyatt gym. The gym is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, free of charge for all hotel guests. Also at the Hyatt, frequent business travelers can maintain a connection with friends and family while on the road with a customized wake-up call. This service allows loved ones to record personalized greetings exclusively for Hyatt's Gold Passport® members.

In the food and beverage department, the award-winning Ciao Mein and Musashi restaurants have unveiled outdoor dining menus called Al Fresco. Patrons will delight in dining under the stars at Ciao Mein's poolside cabana and Musashi's Japanese garden overlooking Waikiki Beach. Also, for guests seeking a more personalized banquet menu, Hyatt's new personal preference menus allow guests to choose from a variety of main course selections that best suit one's personal tastes.
