Survivor Vanuatu - Episode Guide
Episode 8: Now the Battle Really Begins

By John Fischer, About.com

As episode eight opens the members of Lopevi discuss their loyalty to each other. Julie and Twila are pleased that the men kept their word and evicted John. Still wanting to ensure her status, Julie flirts with Sarge by snuggling up between his legs near the fire. The next morning the men seem to realize what Julie was doing, as does Twila. Julie, Sarge and Twila lay on the beach and drop their drawers to get some sun together, at least until the other men spot this. "Julie is a bad influence" notes Chris. Julie, however, feels that "If those boys want to keep me around strictly for visual stimulation, then hey, I got it in the bag,"

Over at Yasur, Rory is still complaining about how little work gets done by the women except for Scout. He is tired of being the only men among the women. "What a worthless crew. What a completely worthless crew," notes Rory. "I'm ready to get the hell out of Yasur," Rory exclaimed. "I really, really, really want to be around some men! I'm tired of these women."

As the tribes gather for the next Reward Challenge, Scout is thankful to see Twila still on Lopevi and John evicted.

This Reward Challenge is a water relay race where one tribe member must fill a can with water and literally throw the filled can to the next tribe member until the can reaches the last member where only the water is thrown and must be caught by the final member in his can. That member must then climb a ladder and fill a bucket which when heavy enough will cause the bucket to lower and a flame to be lit. The various tribe members initially have trouble with tossing the can of water. Rory is the water catcher for Yasur and he uses his clothing to catch water and ring it out into his can, but Ami's poor tossing causes Yasur to lose. Chad is much more proficient tossing water to Chris. Lopevi wins Reward and wins, cookies, milk and chocolate cake.

While Yasur was eager to win reward they soon learn that winning so many foods with high sugar can actually upset their bodies after so many days without it. They actually regret winning the reward. Meanwhile Chad forges an alliance with Chris, not knowing that Chris has already made identical alliances for the final two with Sarge and Julie.

The teams now gather for the next Immunity Challenge. First they learn that the tribes are being merged and that this will be an individual immunity. This is an individual water Challenge that will be staged in two elimination rounds and one final heat. Players must swim out to a tower, climb the tower, walk across a balance beam to retrieve a flag, swim back to shore and place it in receptacle on the beach. The first two individuals in each heat to get three flags back to the beach will advance to the finals.

The first heat consists of Sarge, Leann, Eliza, Julie and Chris. Sarge easily took the first spot in the race, with second place coming down to Eliza and Chris. In the end, Eliza surpassed Chris and collected all three flags to join Sarge in the final heat.

The second heat consisted of Scout, Twila, Chad, Rory and Ami. Rory took an early lead with Ami close behind. Rory's lead widened, securing him a spot in the final heat. The competition for the final heat's second slot came down to Ami and Chad, with Ami winning out.

The final heat was now set with Ami, Sarge, Rory and Eliza. Sarge takes an early lead, with Rory right behind him. All of the contestants are exhausted after their elimination heats. Sarge takes an early lead, which only widens and he easily wins the final round and with it Individual Immunity.

Everyone appears to be in a good mood as the now unified team returns to the Lopevi camp which they have chosen for their final home. Scout is delighted to see Twila again whom she "missed deep down in places she can't talk about." Awaiting the unified tribe is a feast of dried fruit, cheese and crackers, leftover cake and wine for all.

As the Survivors paint their bodies and create their flag, they decide to name their new tribe Alinta, which means "people of fire." All is not as happy as it seems, however, as Rory is intent on getting the men to vote off Ami with whom he had issues all along. Sarge has noticed how his new buddy Julie is very close to Ami, so the men seem to agree that Ami must go. She is clearly the leader of the women and has made it clear that she wants only women in the game. In order to accomplish this, however, they need the support of Julie and Twila. Caught between loyalty to their original team of all women and their new male friends, Julie and Twila assure both factions of their vote at Tribal Counsel.

As the Survivors gather for Tribal Counsel, all realize that something has to give. With whom will Julie and Twila vote? When the votes are totaled, both Julie and Twila have returned to the all-female alliance and Rory is voted out of the game. Now outnumbered 6 to 3, things do not appear bright for the men of Survivor: Vanuatu.
