An independent constitutional monarchy, the Kingdom of Tonga consists of more than 150 islands in Polynesia in the South Pacific. The main island groups are Tongatapu, Haapai and Vavau. Captain James Cook visited the islands and named them the Friendly Islands. Complete independence from Great Britain was attained in 1970. Tonga is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
