Across Crater Rim Drive near the Visitor Center sits the original 1877 Volcano House, moved from its original location and since 1974 serving as home to the Volcano Art Center.
The Volcano Art Center (VAC) is a nonprofit, tax-exempt, educational organization, founded in 1974. Their mission is to promote, develop, and perpetuate the artistic and cultural heritage of Hawaii's people and environment through activities in the visual, literary, and performing arts.
Exhibits, demonstrations, and special events take place in the Gallery, featuring artwork by over 300 artists and inspired by Hawaii's volcanoes. The VAC Gallery is operated under a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service. It is open from 9:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. daily.
